Scripture: John 13:1–17
Sometimes the strongest thing you can do is take the lower place. Make the call. Help with the work. Notice the person everyone else walks past. Following Jesus gives everyday service a deeper purpose.
In John 13, Jesus shares a meal with His disciples before His suffering. Knowing who He is and where He is going, He gets up, takes a towel, and washes their feet. The Teacher attends to a task associated with serving others. His authority makes His humility all the more striking.
Peter struggles to receive this care. Jesus explains that Peter needs what He gives. Then Jesus invites His disciples to follow His example: their understanding should become action. These verses are paraphrased here; read the full passage below.
There is something for us on both sides of that basin. We can receive Christ’s care without pretending to be self-sufficient. We can also serve without needing the spotlight. Whether you have followed Jesus for years or are exploring faith, consider what love looks like when it takes responsibility for a simple, needed task.
Put your faith in motion
Choose one practical act of service this week. Help a neighbor with an errand, share a meal, or take on a task someone else usually carries. Ask what would actually help, respect their answer, and do it without turning their need into your announcement.
A prayer for the week
Jesus, help me receive Your love and follow Your example. Show me whom I can serve with patience and dignity. Give me humility to listen and willingness to act, even when no one applauds. Amen.
Bring it to Sunday’s table
Which is harder for you: accepting help or serving without recognition—and what might Jesus be teaching you through that?
